HOW DID THE RIVER JUNGLE MARATHON 2010 COME ABOUT?

It all started when the founder of The Marathon Shop missed the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010. Feeling a little left out, a little crazy and with screws a little loose, he decided to run a full marathon distance a week after SCMKL 2010 anyway!

Little James didn’t like running alone, so he did the sanest thing he could think off… create a event page on Facebook and see if there are any other crazy people out there interested about doing this with him!

There were 5 crazy people, and on 4th July 2010, we ran the Inaugura
l KL-PJ-KL Interstate 2010 Marathon. A week later, news spread and we were known as the 5 loco runners who ran our own marathon. The Marathon Shop was asked by runners from as far north as Penang and as far south as Singapore, when are we doing something like this again!

Hence, The River Jungle Marathon 2010 was born…

WHY THE RIVER JUNGLE MARATHON 2010?
We believe running should be fun; it shouldn’t be all about how fast we can run.
The River Jungle Marathon is not a race. There is no big prize money at the finish line, no medals, no award giving ceremony. It’s simply for runners who find joy of just being able to run!

WHERE DO WE START / END?

The race will begin next to the Police Station Batu 18, Hulu Langat. (or Balai Polis Bt. 18, Hulu Langat) It will end, at the same place.

THE ROUTE
The first thing you need to know is that you will be running a full marathon distance. It’s 42.195 km (or a little more), and there is no other distance. It is, not for the faint of heart.
The River Jungle Marathon is a road run (all asphalt, and no, it’s not a trail run). The route will take you through the scenic villages of Hulu Langat leading you up a 1000 feet climb or about 2.5KM of non-stop uphill running, past valleys, rivers, mountain views, jungle, a hot spring, and even monkeys. Yes, monkeys (if you’re lucky).
It won’t be easy, but if you’re a nature lover who likes getting away from the usual hustle and bustle of a city road race then this will be exactly what you will be looking for!

RACE TECHNICALITY

First thing first:
 THIS IS NOT A RACE!
There is nothing technical about it. SO what is we run 43KM or 41KM, we will still be running right? Of course, we will do our best to ensure it gets as close to 42.195 KM as possible.

HOW WILL WE DO THIS?

The run will be divided into 3 pacer groups.

There will be a 5 hour group, 6 hour group and a 7 hour group. You may fall back into the subsequent group throughout the run.

Each of these groups will be supported by 2 cars. The first car will be leading the way with the needs and hydration of each runner. The second car will be driving behind the last runner. This is precautionary just in case a runner needs a lift, gets sick, injured or etc.

WHAT IS THE FALL BACK SYSTEM?

It is a group run divided into 3 pacer groups. There will be a 5 hour pacer, 6 hour pacer and a 7 hour pacer. You choose which group you want to be in when you sign up, and along the way, if you think it is too fast for you, you can Fall Back to the next group. What does this mean? If you are in the 7 hour group and you want to give up along the way, we hope you won’t, but if you must… you can hop into the safety car.

Let’s say, you start in the 5 hour group and throughout the way you think it’s a little too hard. You can therefore, slow down and wait for the 6 hour group and join them. There is no time limit, so you can just enjoy the run and the people running with you. It will be a good training session for those wanting to go long and longing some company, or for those who simply just want to make some new friends!

Thought:
This is going to be an excited running event! Ultimately running 6 hours with a group of runners, you will know them well when you have finished your marathon distance.

Yes. im registered.

The Olive Branch Cafe, Ara Damansara

Olive Branch Cafe - A Moroccan style dining. I was introduced by my colleague who staying nearby Ara Damansara. He said, he discover this Moroccan style dining and its was great, fantastic! The cafe are lead by a Moroccan who married to malay wife.

On that day, he got bring some left-over of lamb couscous which he and his wife can not finish the big portion. i tried the lamb rice.. omg.. its really nice! i never have this kind of good feel when eating lamb. My colleague said their Chicken Tajine was nice too! Must try!

Since that day, i said to myself, i must try it out both! Eat the whole portion by myself!

The very 1st time i got the chance to visit Olive Branch was on 1 of the Saturday. I thinks was end of May. oh, it was 28 May 2010, wesak day, 1 day before my Sundown Marathon in Singapore. Its treated as part of my carbo loading! hehe...

Out of boredom, i text my friend and she also free and our makan trip is on. I was 1st time visiting Ara Damansara and i have done my hometown, google map. FYI, my office is going to move to Ara Damansara next year...

Taken with my SE W610i - Poor quality photo.

Since its was my 1st time visiting, i tried to order Chicken Tajine but was told chicken tajine need to pre-order or place order 2 hours or earlier before coming as the process to cook chicken tajine took a lots of time. So we just order Lamb couscous rice for 1 person portion and roasted chicken rice.

Still the main focus is on Lamb Couscous!
Its was same good taste as that day i tried the left over brought by my colleague! Im loving it.

On the left is the chili source, a cold source, which i like it very much.
On the right, soup.

Deng deng deng.

My friend commented that, normally she did not eat lamb as the lamb have some sort of smell which she dislike, but this dish she have totally have different view! She said she going to bring her family to try it again.

They closed on Sunday! Argh.. last Sunday, i was free and whose know they closed. Lucky i got call the owner before depart from house.

Call them in advance to order to avoid disappointment!

Tender chunks of lamb, potatoes and carrots served on a bed of fluffy, buttery couscous served with chickpea and lamb stew. A traditional Moroccan dish lovingly prepared over 2 hours to achieve the perfect consistency and flavour of the couscous.

Guess, the picture above is different from what i have is because im ordering 1 person portion, whereas the pictures above should be 2 person portion or more which placed with thick clay of plat which directly used for cooking.

Thanks you my colleague on his good adventures which lead to me knowing this great Moroccan food at Ara Damansara although its abit far from Setapak!
